Blue Plaque Award Nomination

Dear friends and activists

Peter Tatchell has been nominated for a Southwark Blue Plaque Award, which honours distinguished public figures and events.

The Awards will be decided by an open public vote, so I'm urging you to take 5 minutes to vote for Peter. Anyone from anywhere in the UK can vote. The voting closes on March 31 2009.

To cast a vote for Peter, simply e-mail vote4icons@southwark.gov.uk and put "Peter Tatchell" in the subject field.

Here's an article from Southwark News about his nomination:

As you well know, Peter has been campaigning for LGBT rights for 40 years. He was a leading activist in the Gay Liberation Front in London in the early 1970s. In 1990 he was one of the people who co-founded the queer rights direct action group OutRage!.

He has also campaigned on a wide range of other human rights issues since the late 1960s: against the death penalty and the Vietnam War, and for Aboriginal rights in his homeland of Australia; plus campaigns against nuclear weapons, apartheid, the Iraq war, and his two attempted citizen's arrests of Zimbabwe tyrant Robert Mugabe in 1999 and 2001.

He continues to fight for equality and liberation on many issues, from LGBT human rights to campaigns against climate destruction and for the right to self-determination of oppressed peoples and nations such as Palestine, West Papua, Balochistan, Somaliland and the Western Sahara.

He was voted the sixth greatest "Hero of our Time" by readers of the New Statesman in 2006, and in the same year The Independent listed him as one of top 50 "Good" people in Britain.

I think a Southwark Blue Plaque would be a deserved tribute to his lifetime of campaigning.  Please vote, and forward this email on to as many people as you possibly can.
