Of course the decision was ridiculous, the song is over 20 years old and McColl was otherwise very much gay friendly. What is more interesting however is that when overriding the original decision, controller Andy Parfitt, said that "Radio 1 does not play homophobic lyrics or condone bullying of any kind". The very same station which supported Mr Moyles and his use of the word gay to mean naff....

Although dear old Peter T seems to think differently: "The word faggot is being sung as an insult, alongside scumbag and maggot. In this abusive context it is unacceptable"

Peter's main point was the double standards of the media, who happily play the Freedom of Speech card when it comes to homophobia, but who wouldn't dream of broadcasting a racist song.
